Jun 1, 2020 · Known as the "New French Extremity," films under this umbrella are notable for their visceral scenes of explicit sex, gore, torture, uncomfortable topics, and a myriad of disorienting techniques designed to make the viewer uncomfortable.
I’ve seen most of the New French Extremity films (horror obvs) — looking for something similar, but different. Recommend. Any movies, TV series, or documentaries (ie true crime) super welcome. These are the films I’m talking about, all of which I liked — some of which I loved: Martyrs (2008)
Aug 5, 2021 · A look at the rise of the New French Extremity and why its films are difficult to categorize as merely horror.
- Martyrs. Widely regarded as the best New French Extremity film of all time, Martyrs perfectly embodies everything that makes this gnarly, provocative, and controversial subgenre of horror great.
- Inside. Utterly relentless and disgustingly violent, Inside is one of the best New French Extremity movies of the 2000s, as it not only helped put the subgenre on the map but nearly perfected it.
- Frontier(s) Arguably one of the strangest films on this entire list, Frontier(s) is a New French Extremity film that tells the tale of a gang of young criminals who flee from Paris only to find themselves ensnared by a family of Nazi cannibals hellbent on creating the next Aryan master race.
- High Tension. While the twist of the film may have overshadowed the utter brilliance of this phenomenal New French Extremity film, there is no doubt that High Tension is one of the greatest films to come out of the controversial subgenre.
- Martyrs. When Martyrs came out, controversy followed it everywhere, many people stating that it is the most violent, brutal and sadistic film ever made, and it still has the reputation.
- Inside. Inside (A l’interieur) is one of the highlights of the New French Extremity movement, and has gained a wide cult following since its release. A 9-month pregnant woman whose husband died 4 months prior in a car accident is preparing herself for birth when a creepy female stalker breaks into her house, with very evil intentions.
- Irreversible. Irreversible is a shocking film (almost too shocking) about rape, revenge, pregnancy, and more. Gaspar Noé, the director, delivers to the audience a confrontational film filled with sights and sounds and audio frequencies meant to disturb and nauseate the viewer.
- Man Bites Dog. Man Bites Dog is a hilarious, outrageously violent French film that is essentially their version of Natural Born Killers, in that it satirizes the way serial killers (and violence) are portrayed in the media.
