I know it is *the* reference for German, but I prefer other monolingual dictionaries like DWDS or Wiktionary. Duden's definitions are usually overly abstract, and often they lead you round in circles (i.e. it says A means B, and when you look up B, it says it means A). Or watch German YT/TV with subtitles.
Wörterbuch. Das Onlinewörterbuch bietet Ihnen umfassende Informationen zu Rechtschreibung, Grammatik und Bedeutung eines Wortes. Außerdem zeigt es den richtigen Gebrauch sowie die Aussprache und Herkunft eines Wortes und verzeichnet dessen Synonyme.
Duden has an app which is called Die Wörterbuch-Apps von Duden. I liked the idea, because I have an Italian monolingual dictionary on my laptop (Mac) and my phone (iOS) and this helped me a lot with learning.
Feb 8, 2024 · Dict.cc, Leo, Pons, Duden, Linguee, Bab.la and Collins are all free and equally user-friendly German dictionaries with solid translations, audio pronunciation and examples of usage. Most of them are accessible online and via iOS or Android apps.

- Dict.cc. This is by far one of my favorite German-English dictionaries online. It doesn’t have tons of bells and whistles, the design may be somewhat outdated, but its real strength is in the results, which include many idiomatic phrases and terminology from a variety of fields.
- Dict.leo.org. In terms of features and quality this one is very similar to dict.cc, so it may just be a matter of preference – some of my German teaching colleagues swear by Leo, some by Dict.cc.
- Bab.la. First of all, bab.la has a really clean and neat design, and in terms of presentation is probably one of my favorites. Search results are very easy to navigate and always come with synonyms, examples and context.
- Pons.com. This online dictionary is provided by Pons, a renowned German publisher of dictionaries that was established in 1978. Just like their paper publications, the Pons online dictionary features a very clean layout and solid translations.

Aug 20, 2024 · The new Duden dictionary is thicker than ever with an additional 3,000 words in its 29th edition. The reference work, which is out on Tuesday, also includes spelling and grammar changes.
