Through the use of characters, the controversial subject of the death penalty is explored. We learn why some may be in support of it while others completely object it, but the audience is never forced to choose sides which is something I appreciated so much about this film.
Can we talk about how great this film is? For one, the dialogue is fantastic as Sister Helen has meaningful discussions with not only our 'dead man' Matthew Poncelet, but also his family and the families of the victims involved.
It may be tough to watch at times, given the raw emotions that are laid bare, but Dead Man Walking remains relevant even today. A death row inmate turns for spiritual guidance to a local nun in the days leading up to his scheduled execution for the murders of a young couple.

Dec 29, 1995 · Dead Man Walking has great performances, relevant messages about life and controversial topics like the death penalty, and a fine story. However, the movie can be overly sentimental at times, plus it could've been cut a good 10 minutes. Nonetheless, it's worth a watch.
