Centered on the left (west) bank of the Rhine, Cologne is located on the River Rhine (Lower Rhine), about 35 km (22 mi) southeast of the North Rhine-Westphalia state capital Düsseldorf and 25 km (16 mi) northwest of Bonn, the former capital of West Germany.

Believed to have been constructed around 50 AD, it stands as the best-preserved section of the ancient Roman city wall. Situated in the city center, the Cologne Römerturm is conveniently located approximately 200 meters from the Appellhofplatz Metro station and 500 meters from the iconic Cologne Cathedral.
When Cologne was elevated to Free Imperial City status at the end of the 15th century, it was the largest city in the Holy Roman Empire, but only one of several important trading centers between the Scheldt and Elbe.
