Chinatown by contrast is a perennial classic thanks to it's razor-sharp screenplay, well realized themes, Nicholson's iconic portrayal, and Polanski's direction. Long story short, I think LA Confidential is good fun but Chinatown is one of the most enduring works of the American New Wave.

Chinatown is one of those 'perfect' movies. Not necessarily the greatest, or even a personal favorite. But every single element you usually look at in a movie - acting, direction, editing, music, writing, costumes, lighting, etc.) was done to perfection. Casablanca and Jaws fit the perfect category as well.
