Bone absolutely rewards reading as an adult. I was an adult when I was introduced to Bone. I love it. The writer does a great job building a world within which this story resides and the emotion - humour and love and fear - all arise from a well-written story with great characters.
I haven't read it in so long, I really should re-visit Bone. I remember it being described as being like Lord of the Rings in the manner you described. It starts out as simple and entertaining, but it gets more and more epic, both in story and emotion.
