  3. Dec 1, 2010 · Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” is a full-bore melodrama, told with passionate intensity, gloriously and darkly absurd. It centers on a performance by Natalie Portman that is nothing short of heroic, and mirrors the conflict of good and evil in Tchaikovsky’s ballet “Swan Lake.”

  4. I don't particularly enjoy ballet but the dance sequences looked fantastic. The plot was something we've seen many times (person faces inner conflict trying to reach perfection) but I loved the way Aronofsky handled it. I also think the actress who portrayed the mother deserves some form of award.

  6. I've noticed there's not a single discussion of this great movie in this subreddit, but rather just comparations to Aronofsky's other works, or Red Shoes, so I might aswell start one. I'll give my personal analysis of the movie, and you're encouraged to post yours, or a critique to mine, to get the discussion rolling.

  8. At times, Black Swan comes across as a psychological thriller, but it also contains elements of lurid melodrama and horror. And, although there is no nudity, the film's frank sexuality (which includes masturbation and a lesbian tryst) edges it toward soft-core erotica.
