That probably would've lead to less criticism of it, too, since a lot of soreness from players resulted from people expecting a continuation of the Metroid-influenced gameplay of Axiom Verge. AV2 has a much stronger focus on movement, exploration, and atmosphere. Combat feels like an afterthought at times.
Most games I play are metroidvania or metroidvania-adjacent, and Axiom Verge 2 stands out to me in the genre for the fluidity of its movement and general looseness to how it expects you to explore. The game puts beacons on your map for where you need to go to advance the story, but I enjoyed ignoring the map and just moving about the world.
