Been using Aternos for a good while (2 years) and so far I've never had any problems with it. The server aren't the greatest but for a free server it's quite good. They also make money from ads, using an adblocker makes the website navigation much slower.
If you have a good enough pc I recommend hosting a server, Aternos is good but no custom plugins/mods and it can take up to 15 minutes to start in my experience.
