Reliability and validity, jointly called the “psychometric properties” of measurement scales, are the yardsticks against which the adequacy and accuracy of our measurement procedures are evaluated in scientific research.
Four indicators of construct validity are relevant to scale development: convergent validity, discriminant validity, differentiation by known groups, and correlation analysis. Convergent validity is the extent to which a construct measured in different ways yields similar results.
There are two distinct criteria by which researchers evaluate their measures: reliability and validity. Reliability is consistency across time (test-retest reliability), across items (internal consistency), and across researchers (interrater reliability).

Reliable measures, sometimes referred to as good measures, are those which measure a variable precisely and consistently. At least four related factors determine how ‘good’ a measure is: (a) Precision: How free are the measurements from random errors? The degree of precision is represented by the number of significant figures in the measurement.

The validity of self-estimated subjective phenomena is relative and cannot be assessed absolutely. The validity of a scale is study specific, and must be considered each time the scale or the questionnaire is chosen for a new study.
