Oren Moverman’s “The Dinner” is an incredibly frustrating movie, almost purposefully so. It is a film about people who say things like “We’re gonna talk tonight … put it all on the table,” and then never do.
Unfortunately, it takes almost three-quarters of The Dinner to get to the meat of the movie, to the fiery confrontation between Claire, Stan and Kate. Laura Linney is, as always, completely wonderful.

We bad-movie watchers have our own anticriteria, the sorts of badness we prefer. Some of us use the term “bad movies” to mean, simply, films that emerge from a supposedly lowbrow genre, or films that are stylized in the manner we tend to label “camp.” (Road Housefrom 1989 is this kind of bad movie, and is very good at being one.) Some of us prefer ...
“Bad” can also mean “morally coarsening”—which “trash film,” in the Bangs/Kael sense, often is. For that reason, I am not terribly interested in trash, as such, though I admire some films thus labeled. Nor do I care, except sociologically, about the values assigned to varying brow placements. When I think a film from a lowbrow genre is good, I simp...

The movie is huge in terms of events and myth, the final shoot out feels almost self conscious of its iconic status, but not in a bad way. I think any movie that you can tell is really setting out for greatness and then doesn’t falter and actually pulls off whatever potentially pretentious or massive thing it’s trying to do is a masterpiece.
