To say that the flow of “The Dinner” is clunky would be an understatement. It is purposefully designed to push against traditional cinematic rhythms. However, formal experimentation can easily give way to incoherent nonsense, and Moverman falls into the second category far too often here.
The Dinner is a 2017 American drama film directed and written by Oren Moverman, and based on the Dutch novel of the same name by Herman Koch. It is the third film adaptation of the novel, following the 2013 original Dutch version Het Diner by Menno Meyjes and the 2014 Italian film I nostri ragazzi by Ivano De Matteo.
The movie goes out of its way to not provide any clarity on what you’re actually watching — a fleeting glimpse there, a resentful comment here. Not enough to hook you despite its commanding cast.

I recently watched Beatriz At Dinner, and though it had some excellent performances from both Hayek and Lithgow, great cinematography and some good intentions, its cheap ending lost it a lot of points for me.
