So after the song featured in the film came up on my Spotify mix, I decided to watch That Thing You Do! again for the first time in ~10 years. In doing some research I discovered that there was a directors cut, adding 40 minutes onto the theatrical cut runtime.
Plenty of films have been made about the grueling climb to rock-and-roll fame, but few carry the effortless charm that That Thing You Do! has. Written and directed by Tom Hanks, the film is as cookie-cutter as it gets, dodging the dark depths that typically haunt rock biopics.
