      • In all, Matilda is a charming and clever little movie with excellent and innovative filmmaking from Danny DeVito. With Mara Wilson’s lead actress performance, Matilda remains one of the very best children’s films for any family to enjoy together.

    • Matilda is a strong, feminine, female protagonist. Many times in movies, the strong female characters are described as “one of the boys,” or they only know their amazing skills because “they had brothers.”
    • Matilda cuts toxic people out of her life — even her parents. It doesn’t matter what someone’s relationship is to you; if they abuse you, they don’t deserve you in their lives.
    • Cheating is wrong. Matilda’s father is a dirty cheat who runs a very illegal (and immoral) car dealership. He is painted as the villain, and the FBI is hot on his tail.

  2. Matilda is such a great movie. I won't say it's underrated, because it does have a 90% on RT, but man, rewatching it with the family this Christmas for the first time since I was a kid has really floored me.

  3. Aug 2, 1996 · Matilda” is not in any sense a “children’s movie,” although older children will probably like it a lot. It is a dark family comedy about stupid parents, cruel teachers and a brave little girl, and it is no surprise to find that Danny DeVito not only stars but directed it.

    • It Encapsulates Roald Dahl's Characteristically Twisted Fairytale Tone. All of Dahl's books (which include Charlie and the Chocolates Factory and Witches), and their subsequent movie adaptations, are dark, dark, dark.
    • It Features A Strong Female Character. She's bright, she's unapologetic, and she is able to handle the burden of being in a crass, unloving family for the first six and a half years of her life.
    • Oh Yeah, And That Strong Female Character Is 6-And-A-Half Years Old. Like, whatever, I was off eating glue when I was that age.
    • That Strong Female Character Is Also A Fashion Icon. She just makes that hair ribbon look so fly.

  5. In the discussion for best movie ever in my opinion. I’m crying holding my 2yr old daughter just thinking about it. “So Matilda's strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea.
