It's a really great erotic thriller that has elements of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (like the murder of the female lead early on in the movie) and of giallo movies (the killer using a straight razor as a murder weapon, the visuals, and the emphasis on sex and sexuality).
The truth is, it's both. Really bad, with flashes of brilliance. For one thing, it takes a satirical tone, deliberately or not, cheesily burlesquing the seedy sexual flavor of so many films from the late 70s.
Dressed To Kill is the closest I have seen an American film come to capturing the feel of an authentic Italian gaillo film of the 1970's. Now I will say the depection of cross dressing in today's society is down right beyond offense.
