Illmatic is impressive in a much different way than TPAB. TPAB does a lot of experimentation with sound, writing, song structures. Illmatic is in a lot of ways opposite to that.

The beats are better than Illmatic’s, the lyrics aren’t. You believe every word Nas spits on Illmatic, you don’t on IWW. However, It Was Written is nonetheless a remarkably penned collection of songs. I’ll never understand how some choose to overlook it.
It’s pretty undeniable that 'Illmatic' has the best ‘rapping’ on any album ever. I’ll give you that. But it’s a headphone listen, an album you put on one or twice a year because you want to hear raw lyricism.
