On completion of his PhD in 1985 Ian was appointed as a lecturer in Geophysics at the University of Reading, before returning to the University of Edinburgh in a similar role in 1989. He was promoted to Reader in 1996, and to a personal chair in Seismology and Rock Physics in 2000.

Ian Main is Professor of Seismology and Rock Physics in the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh. He obtained a Ph.D. in seismology at Edinburgh, and subsequently worked at Reading University before returning.
