How to Cheat in the Leaving Certificate is a 1997 independent Irish film directed by Graham Jones, in which six teenagers devise a plan to cheat in their Leaving Certificate final school examinations. The film was shot in black and white on Super 16mm and was later blown up to 35mm for theatrical distribution.
Nov 18, 2012 · Shot during the summer of 1996 and showing the last school year (culminating in the middle of 1997) at James Joyce College in Dublin, the film quickly assembles a group of characters who want to beat the system by cheating on the big school-leaving exam called the leaving certificate or just “leaving cert”.
Despite the black and white style, this movie was released in 1998, just a year after I graduated high school. Prior to watching this movie, I’d never heard of a Leaving Certificate. I asked an Irish friend about the certificate, and he informed me that it’s one of the most important standardized tests an Irish student takes.

In fairness this ads to the film's mystique, leaving more questions than answers for the viewer. Cameos come from film financer Chris De Burgh, Johnny Murphy of 'The Commitments' fame, among other local stars of day, 'How To Cheat..' requires at least one viewing per year as an unashamed pleasure.
