   • Island historian T.W. Paterson describes Benson as either an eccentric or a lazy but honest grumbler. The name Mount Benson was adopted officially on June 30, 1910. It was proposed as a site for the Dominion astronomical observatory in 1912, but instead in 1925 the fire lookout tower was built and it lasted about fifty years.

   • Hiking up Mount Benson is a great introduction to Vancouver Island! It does not take too long, and it’s within view of Nanaimo, so it works well as a first hike off the ferry. I loved that the trail was so varied with tangled forest, fabulous rocky outcrops and a little bit of scrambling to keep things interesting.

   • Intermediate. It is short and steep, so feels hard, but the route is easy to follow. There are some small scramble sections, but there is a rope to make it easier. There are a few different trails up Mount Benson. We did the one started from the main trailhead in Mount Benson Provincial Park.
