From the film's opening moments, Montiel introduces us to an intimate world of family and friendship that totally blindsided me by its greatness.

It has great moments, especially all of the stuff from his adolescent days in Astoria. (The chapter entitled "Clowns" is hysterical.)This is a rare instance where the movie is actually better than the book.
