Born in Swansea, Davies graduated from Oxford University and joined the BBC’s children’s department in 1985. He left the BBC in the early 1990s to work for Granada Television and later became a freelance writer.
Born simply Russell Davies (the 'T' was added to avoid confusion with another writer and broadcaster of the same name) in Swansea in 1963, he spent much of his early childhood watching television and creating his own stories, often in the form of cartoon strips.
