The first Smurf appeared in Johan and Peewit on 23 October 1958 in the album La Flûte à Six Schtroumpfs ( The Six Smurfed Flute ). As the Smurfs became increasingly popular, Peyo started a studio in the early 1960s, where a number of talented comics artists started to work.

When he was seven years old, Pierre Culliford’s father unexpectedly died of myopathy, which put the family in major financial difficulties, doubled when World War II broke out. At the age of 15, Culliford was forced to abandon his studies and get a job. He worked as assistant projectionist in a Brussels cinema for the remainder of the war.

When he began to do small humorous drawings, he took that name as a pseudonym. Peyo quit school at age 16 and got a job as a projectionist's assistant in a movie theater. He attended the Fine Arts Academy in Brussels for a short time as a teen, but otherwise he was completely self-taught.
