    The initial journey began with the release of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stonein the UK in 1997. The original cover was graced with the artwork of Thomas Taylor.     In 1998, Scholastic in the United States took notice of the series’ burgeoning popularity and began publishing the series, beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Mary Grand Pré illustrated all seven books, her style becoming synonymous with the US editions.

    While the series was often recognized as children’s literature, it gained a large adult following. The US stuck with Grand Pré’s artwork, while the UK released ‘adult’ versions with less whimsical covers up to the fourth book.

    In 2010, the UK introduced a Signature Edition, featuring covers illustrated by Scottish linocut artist Clare Melinsky. The hardcover collector’s editions from both countries were extravagant – embossed with gold and exuding elegance.

    To mark the 15th anniversary of the Sorcerer’s Stone, Scholastic unveiled a re-released paperback series with new cover art by Kazu Kibuishi. The redesigned spines, when aligned, formed a striking silhouette of Hogwarts – a delightful addition to any Potterhead’s bookshelf!

    Adult versions saw a major refresh in 2015 with intricate artwork by woodcut artist Andrew Davidson. These beautifully complex covers offered a more mature appeal.

    The 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stonein 2017 was celebrated with Bloomsbury releasing special house editions in the Hogwarts house colors.

    2015 also marked a new era in Harry Potter book covers as British illustrator Jim Kay was tasked with creating fully illustrated versions of the books. With a unique piece of artwork for every chapter, Kay brought a fresh perspective to the series.

    In a 2022 update, Pottermore Publishing revealed designs for Harry Potter eBooks and audiobooks, created by the design team at Studio La Plage.
