Whitmer was born in Michiganon August 23, 1971. She earned her bachelor's degree and J.D. from Michigan State University in 1993 and 1998, respectively. She worked as an associate attorney for Dickinson Wright PLCC before being elected to the state legislature. She also worked as a lecturer at Michigan State University in 2015.
