By 1916, when Hawaiian music had emerged as America’s latest craze, Chicago’s mail order giant decided it wanted to properly corner the market on ukuleles, flat-tops, and slide guitars. Unsurprisingly, the Harmony Company—in the span of just a few years—had become the country’s largest maker of such instruments.

- Banjos and Minstrel Shows. As early as 1769, white minstrels impersonated African American musicians by playing banjos and performing in blackface. By the 1840s, minstrel shows had gained great popularity and Joel Walker Sweeney, a white minstrel performer, had become famous for his proficiency on the banjo.
- The Banjo and the Civil War. Fairbanks & Cole banjo from the late 1800s. Although Sweeney and his contemporaries introduced the banjo to a wider audience, the Civil War became the true catalyst for the instrument’s popularity.
- The Banjo’s Role in Early Jazz. From the 1870s to the 1910s, the banjo as we know it today started to take form as manufacturers added frets, resonators and tone rings.
- Banjos in Bluegrass. Bill Monroe, a giant of bluegrass who was born in 1911, had hits in the 1930s and was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in 1939. However, Monroe hadn’t yet developed the chops that would become his signature style.
- The Neanderthal Flute. Up first on our list of very old musical instruments is the Neanderthal Flute. But this isn’t the modern concert flute we recognize today.
- Bullroarer. Up next is the Bullroarer, an ancient musical instrument that dates back to 18,000 BC. It can be found all over the globe. It’s usually a flat plank of wood in an elliptical shape with a long string attached to it.
- Jiahu Gǔdí. Our next instrument is one that can be traced back to roughly 6000 BCE in China. This makes the Jiahu Gǔdí the oldest musical instrument from this country.
- Tutankhamun’s Trumpets. Another very old instrument is Tutankhamun’s trumpets, which were discovered in Pharaoh Tutankhamun’s burial chamber. They originated around 5000 BC.
