Sir Alexander " Sandy " McCall Smith CBE FRSE (born 24 August 1948) is a Scottish legal scholar and author of fiction. He was raised in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and was formerly Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh.
McCall Smith was able to publish a novel a year in the series because he could write at least 4,000 words a day, and, if inspired, as much as 1,000 words an hour. Because of the popularity of the series, the books were translated into at least 26 other languages and sold millions of copies.
