Garden designer Keppel, from Staffordshire, was the first person to win £1million on the show in 2000, when it was hosted by Chris Tarrant. Keppel’s million-pound question was: “Which king was married to Eleanor Aquitaine?” which she correctly answered as Henry II. She later joined the team of trivia experts on BBC quiz show Eggheads, which sees a ...

Former physics teacher Edwards won the prize a year later, in April 2001. He also continued on the game show path, competing in the Eggheads spin-off, Are You an Egghead? in which people competed to join the expert panel on the main show. Edwards did not win a spot on the panel. He has appeared on other quiz shows including a special edition of The...

Brydges also scooped the jackpot in 2001, just a few months later in September. The jackpot winner worked as a banker, lived in London and had studied at Oxford University. His win came shortly after the Charles Ingram coughing scandal.

It was not until 2004 that someone claimed the £1million prize again when Irish quiz champion Gibson answered all the questions correctly. Gibson, a national and international quizzing champion, has been in winning teams at the International Quizzing Association’s (IQA) World Quizzing Championships multiple times and is currently ranked the world’s...

Wilcox won the jackpot in September 2006 – and was the final person to do so until the upcoming series. He is a retired civil service worker and reportedly now lives in the South of France. The quiz enthusiast had appeared on multiple other quiz shows before Millionaire, includingCountdown, Brain of Britain andMasterbrain.

Ingram also correctly answered the million-pound question in 2001, but his win was discounted as he was accused of cheating amid the infamous coughing scandal. He did not get to keep his winnings – though some still believe he is innocent. His story formed the basis of ITV drama Quiz which aired earlier this year.

    • Judith Keppel. The hit quiz show began in 1998, but it was two years before someone won the top prize – and that person was former garden designer Judith Keppel, who walked away with the £1million on 20th November 2020 having apparently been "struggling for money" before her appearance on the show.
    • David Edwards. It took only five months for a second millionaire on the show, with Welsh former physics teacher and 1990 Mastermind champion David Edwards answering all 15 questions correctly on 21st April 2001.
    • Robert Brydges. The next contestant to win the prize was also in 2001, with Oxford-educated banker Robert Brydges becoming the third millionaire in the show's history.
    • Pat Gibson. After Brydges' win, there was a gap of almost three years until the next millionaire, with Irish world-champion quiz player Pat Gibson eventually ending the drought on 24th April 2004.
