- There is a new villain in the force. Sergeant Danny Waldron, played by Danny Mays, is set to be the latest villain we love to hate. According to Jed Mercurio, the Armed Response Unit leader is perhaps more than he seems, and it’s clear he will start causing mayhem right from the first episode.
- Lindsay Denton will not be returning. Lindsay Denton, played by Keeley Hawes, is still serving her prison sentence after resorting to corruption as she struggled with her mounting debt in Series 2 - so she won’t be in Series 3.
- We’ll be seeing AC-12 in a different light. The first two series explored the darker side of the police force with plenty of dodgy dealings and violence, but it looks like Series 3 will show a more sympathetic view.
- Tensions are mounting in the armed response unit. In the opening episode of Series 3, a suspicious PC Rod Kennedy is determined to get to the bottom of what happened between Waldron and a suspect who was shot dead.
After becoming the highest-rated series on BBC Two in 10 years, Line of Duty was promoted to BBC One beginning with the fourth series in 2017 and fifth in 2019, securing commissions through a sixth series, which concluded on 2 May 2021, after the programme had aired a total of 36 episodes.
- The first series introduced us to the three characters who have continued to be at the centre of the drama ever since: Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar), the commanding officer of Anti Corruption Unit 12 (AC-12), Steve Arnott (Martin Compston), a recent transfer from the Counter-Terrorism Unit, and Kate Fleming, an AC-12 officer who specialises in undercover work.
- Season two saw the introduction of perhaps Line of Duty's most memorable guest star to date – Keeley Hawes as DI Lindsay Denton, the sole survivor of an armed attack on a police convoy that had been transporting a protected witness.
- The big guest star at the start of series three was Daniel Mays, playing armed response team leader Sergeant Danny Waldron – but in a huge twist, he didn't even make it to the end of the first episode.
- Season four introduced another big-name guest star to the mix – this time in the shape of Thandie Newton as Roz Huntley, a detective who was tracking a serial killer.
