On 28 June 2021, La Gazzetta dello Sport announced initially an Italian team of 72 (40 men and 32 women), the largest team ever in athletics. The official composition of the Italian team have been confirmed on 2 July and it reaches finally 76 athletes (41 men and 35 women) without alternate athletes.
