Inversions: Very simply put, an inversion is when you take a note from a chord that isn't the root and put it in the bass. Example: Take a G major chord. It has the notes G-B-D. You have these two possible inversions. Root position: G B D. 1st inversion: B D G - The third of the chord goes in the bass.
Chord inversions on the piano are simply when you take a chord – for example, C Maj (C-E-G) – and you “invert” or change the order of the notes in that chord. In our example, playing the notes C, E and G (in that order) at the same time will give you a C Major chord in what’s called root position.
