- Monitoring flags. The CPS maintains a central record of pre-charge and prosecution outcomes with reference to a number of case monitoring flags, including cases involving offences of child abuse, crimes against older people, domestic abuse, hate crime, modern slavery, and rape.
- Pre-charge decision data. Pre-charge receipts. The total number of suspects referred by the police to the CPS for early advice or a charging decision. The number of pre-charge receipts, for different crime types, referred by the police relies on (a) the police identifying and flagging the cases, by suspect, prior to being referred to CPS and (b) CPS administrators identifying and flagging those cases on the CPS Casework Management System, when they are first registered.
- Specific offences. The CPS does not hold information detailing the conviction rates of specific offences; however, management information is held showing the volume of offences charged, in which a prosecution commenced and reached a first hearing in the magistrates’ courts.
- Prosecution outcomes data. CPS outcomes are recorded on a defendant basis. In some cases, a number of defendants may be prosecuted together. All defendants may be convicted; all may be acquitted; or some may be convicted, and others acquitted.

Outstanding caseload and duration revision
We have worked to refine the way in which we identify and exclude instances where a defendant has been out of the court on a bench warrant in our outstanding caseload estimates. The processes applied to the series are now more closely aligned with HMCTS partners and provide a more robust estimate of the outstanding caseload within the court and removes cases where an often-large portion of time has been spent outside of the courts remit.
Outstanding caseload at the magistrates’ courts decreased as disposals volumes remained above case receipts. Both receipts and disposals increased on the previous year and previous quarter. Small fall in the outstanding caseload at the Crown Court Receipts and disposals increased on the previous quarter and are both in line with volumes seen a year ago. Disposals remained above receipts, so the outstanding caseload fell slightly, down by 0.4% in March 2023 compared to December 2022.

Total financial impositions fell The total value of financial impositions made in Q1 2023 was £164.2 million, down sharply on Q4 2022 (£355.8m) but up 18% on the previous year (£139.4m). The total value of outstanding financial impositions was £1.47 billion in Q1 2023, up by 3% on the previous quarter (£1.42 billion).
The number of completed language service requests increased to a series high while the success rate remained at 95%. There were 47,585 completed requests in Q1 2023, up by 9% on the previous quarter. The success rate remained stable at 95% - the lowest seen since Q4 2016 (92%).
The latest data presented in this publication are provisional. Final data for each calendar year is published in June, following further data cleaning and the incorporation of additional cases not available in our original extracts.
