This is my list of classic movies before 1980. After being kept in hypersleep during a long expedition into deep space, an astronaut crew crash-lands in the 40th century on a planet where highly intelligent non-human ape species are dominant and humans are enslaved.
These are modern classics, the best of the best, the essential movies that millions of people are probably jealous that you're getting to see for the first time. There are a few that might be outside your comfort zone, and a couple that'll introduce you to cultures and environments you know nothing about. This list may be long, but FOMO is eternal.
- It's a Wonderful Life (1946) Rotten Tomatoes® 94%
- Singin' in the Rain (1952) Rotten Tomatoes® 100%
- Rear Window (1954) Rotten Tomatoes® 98%
- 12 Angry Men (1957) Rotten Tomatoes® 100%
A list I wrote for American friends in 1998, after constant pestering. It’s intended to be a list of all the essential classic films you need to see. They are organised (roughly) alphabetically, by decade, starting with the 1920s and then there's an appendix of foreign films after the 1980s at the end. Let me know how many you've seen (or the percentage) in the comments? An annotated version ...

- The List
This is the current edition of the List, updated to include all films in all editions of the 1001 Book, including films culled to make way for newer releases. Some foreign films are listed with multiple titles, in English with the original language title in parenthesis. Any films currently with wiki pages will have links. The order of the list is based upon the 2015 edition of the 1,001 Movies book, with the films removed from earlier editions being placed at the end of their respective years.
A viewable and downloadable version of the list, complete with tracking columns for which films have been reviewed by the 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die Blog Club, and which films are available via Netflix, can be found here: http://www.listsfromchip.blogspot.com/2012/05/1001-movies-you-must-see-before-you-die.html
