In addition to this, there is a restriction of 15 turns between children per couple. May be different for records mode, but that isn't what I have experienced. In my Gongsun Zan campaign there were 2 children born 1 year apart (so 5 turns) and another born 8 or 9 turns later.
Sep 13, 2014 · The way family trees work in Medieval 2 is your generals/family members do not produce children until all of your generals are married. Also each general can only have 4 children. So if your faction leader is married and has 4 children, he can't have anymore children.

Children is offspring's of Faction family member married couples. Children wont die, supposedly they are born(exception is when Faction is destroyed). All children reach maturity at age 16. There is possible, that from time to time Faction will be offered to adopt grown man(General) as child for one of the family members. General age are restricted from 20 to 30 and he will be legitimate as any other child to throne of faction. Adopted children wont count to four children limit.
If Faction prefers have children, then its better to decline Man of Hour or other Adoptions events. Else children simply wont be born, because game considers Faction have enough Generals.
Both of my characters have fairly good instinct, so far all of the adult childrens have about 120 instinct or more. This seems like they inherited a bit of their stats, but the total war encyclopedia in game does not explain it clearly (or I didn't find where I should look).
No children would be born (everyone would become infertile, no matter the traits), no adoptions would be offered, no brides and marriage offers would pop up, and no cool "man of the hour" events would happen no matter how many heroic victories you earned.
