Bangladesh has led the way in reducing child mortality, with neonatal, infant and under-five mortality rates on a constant downward trend over the last 30 years. Yet infant mortality remains high at 34 deaths per 1,000 live births, with two thirds of these deaths occurring within 28 days of birth.
The proportion of under-five children in Bangladesh whose births are reported has risen sharply to 56 per cent in recent years. 6.8 per cent of children aged 5-17 years are involved in child labour.
