It's common for Minecraft players to start with a full set of wooden tools. While this is a good starting point, players can easily get stone tools on the first day of their survival, making it even easier to stay alive. To start, gather three logs by punching a tree.

Exploring Stony biomes is one of the easiest ways to get iron ore and coal. This also applies to Java Edition's Windswept Hills biomes, which are called Extreme Hills biomes in Bedrock. The ores within them can be safely seen from the ground and mined in the middle of the day.

While weaponry and armor are important, a shield should not be underrated. It can be crafted using one iron ingot and six wooden planks. Place one wooden plank in the center of the bottom row, fill the middle row with wooden planks, and place one wooden plank in the top left box and the last in the right box of the top row. To complete the recipe, place the iron ingot in the center box of the top row.

A shield will prevent Skeletons from easily killing you in the early days when you have no armor. It will also take the damage from Creeper explosions and other mob attacks.

An infinite water supply is a necessity for all water players. Building it requires only a bucket and a 2x2 hole in the ground.

One of the potentially frustrating aspects of Minecraft is that you need to be within a certain distance of farms, mob grinders, and other structures to keep them running. If you go too far while mining or exploring, they will stop production until you come within range again. To combat this, you can increase your Simulation Distance.

Surprisingly, Creepers are afraid of Cats and will not go past them even when chasing you. I tested this out by smacking a Creeper and walking backward to my Cats while it followed me.

Once it came close enough to the Cats, the Creeper turned tail and headed in the opposite direction.

To max up your gear and base, you'll need to be able to collect mass quantities of all of the different ores Minecraft offers. This table covers each ore, the Y-Levels it spawns in, and the weakest type of pickaxe you need to mine it.
Ore Name Ore Appearance Y-Level Range Best Y-Level Weakest Required Pickaxe
Coal 256 to 0 96 wooden pickaxe
Copper 112 to -16 48 stone pickaxe
Diamond 16 to -64 -59 iron pickaxe
Emerald 256 to -16 235 iron pickaxe
Making an infinite lava source is harder than making one for water, but it's not impossible. To do this, you'll need an equal number of cauldrons, Dripstone, and lava buckets, plus a stack of a random block to be safe. Start by placing the cauldrons in a straight line on the ground.

Then place a row of blocks the same size three blocks above them.

Afterward, add Dripstone to the bottom of each of the blocks.

Survival is one of the game modes in Minecraft. Players must collect resources, build structures, battle mobs, eat, and explore the world in an effort to survive. In Java Edition, advancements are available on any world type regardless of whether cheats are turned on or off.

- Use the coordinates feature. In the game settings, turn on the coordinates. Whenever you’re playing, sit down with a notepad or take screenshots of important places so that you have their coordinates and can come back if you need to.
- Need a clock or a compass? You don’t have to craft them to use them. This is a trick everyone should know. Clocks and compasses aren’t used all that often but take up space in your inventory and require resources.
- Stay safe underground. Being resource-rich, caves are also equally dangerous. Always use torches to keep areas lit, keep a weapon on your hotbar at all times and wear armour.
- Always carry a water bucket. One should make it a point to carry a water bucket in Minecraft. Whether it be to get down a ravine, walk over lava or save yourself from a tall fall.
- Convert a Nether fortress. Nether fortresses shouldn’t be those scary things that we visit every now and then for Blaze Rods and XP. We can really make them look like never before.
- Build a sky base. Go up high now that the height limit has been increased so much and start working on your own Skyblock base, starting from scratch. You can either create a mini-world by towering up and starting from there or take a huge, impressive mountain and turn it into the best sky base that you’ve ever seen.
- Sky race! If you have an Elytra, you can practice your flying skills in a really fun way. Simply place lots of hoops up in the sky, suspend them with balloons (go into Education Edition for that… or get creative!)
- Complete achievements. You’d think that since you’re playing Minecraft for such a long time, you’ve completed all achievements in the game. But you’ll probably be surprised if you check them out.
