Apr 11, 2022 · Suffixes are modifications of the word stem with spelling changes, or endings, which change the meaning in Spanish. There are many different types of suffixes that we’ll explore today. Let’s start with an overview of what a suffix is.
- ito/a. Usage: To indicate smallness and endearment. This is probably the most common of the diminutive suffixes in Spanish, which expresses smallness and endearment.
- illo/a. Usage: To indicate smallness and endearment, especially common in southern and central Spain (and less in South America). It’s very similar to -ito/a.
- cico/a. Usage: Also a substitute for -ito to indicate smallness and endearment. Examples: calle (street) → calle cica. bote (container) → bote cico. camión (truck) → camion cico.
- uelo/a. Usage: To indicate smallness but in a derogatory way (in some instances, though, the suffix has lost its derogatory meaning and the new word is neutral)
Spy City is a spy thriller television miniseries created by William Boyd about spies in 1961 Berlin, during the Cold War. The series first aired in Germany, and AMC+ picked up the rights to stream in the United States at MIPTV.
Much of the action in Spy City takes place around the Berlin Wall and in the four allied zones occupied by the US, UK, France and the Soviet Union. The real wall was initially a mesh of barbed wire and concrete erected in East Berlin on August 13, 1961 with improvised barriers like lampposts and tramlines.

- ción. How it’s used: to form nouns related to verbs and processes. -ción is used in many English cognates with the suffix “-tion.” These are common nouns that can be helpful to describe academic or work activities.
- dad. How it’s used: to form nouns related to adjectives. -dad is used in many of the same words where English might use “-ty” or “-ity.” It can also take the forms –tad, -idad or -edad.
- mente. How it’s used: to form adverbs from related adjectives. -mente is added to the feminine form of a singular adjective to form the adverb. A simple swap for “-ly” in English will help you identify and form these adverbs.
