As far as the Martin story, I'm not sure how I feel about it either. I don't hate the story. I agree with a reviewer who said it was strange that Martin didn't make plans for Eddie before Martin snuck off for the parole hearing.
There is a bit where Frasier is confiding to Martin over drinks at the bar that he is concerned that Daphne and Niles may not be being honest about their true feelings for each other, and Martin as per usual urges him to “stay out of it“…
The fact that not every ending in Frasier is a feel good, "happily ever after" moment gives the show substance, and gives characters like Martin depth. Another bitter ending I enjoy is when Frasier gets his lifetime achievement award. I feel moments like these elevate Frasier beyond just a sitcom.

Frasier mistakenly compares Freddy to his father, saying he takes care of everyone, but Martin wasn't known for getting involved in people's business.
