Oct 3, 2024 · Why does the novel The Giver end the way it does? The ending of The Giver is ambiguous, hopeful, and bittersweet. Jonas and Gabriel are rapidly sledding downhill and Jonas hears music.
At the end of The Giver, Jonas and Gabe head down through the snow to a place where there is music. Downward, downward, faster and faster. Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead, they were waiting for him; and they were waiting, too, for the baby.
Why did Lois Lowry leave the ending ambiguous? Lowry intentionally left the ending open to interpretation to encourage readers to engage with the novel’s themes and form their own conclusions. It sparks discussions about freedom, sacrifice, and the power of memory.
At age 19, Lowry left Brown to marry Donald Lowry, a U.S. Navy officer. After having four children, she eventually completed her B.A. in English at the University of Maine in 1972. During her studies she was introduced to photography, which became a life-long hobby and profession.
