- If anything sticky ever spilled on the remote, the top of the membrane will be a mess. Use a Q-tip and water to gently clean the mess. Avoid touching the bottom of the membrane, to avoid contaminating the membrane contacts with oil from your skin. If the membrane is dusty but not sticky, use compressed air or a small vacuum to clear it away.

- Check the batteries. Remove the batteries and pop in new ones. It may sound obvious, but it’s often the best and easiest fix for a wonky remote. If the remote still isn’t working, remove the batteries and move on to the next steps.
- Clean the outside. Everyday use can interfere with the buttons. Basic cleaning is the next step. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean the outside of the remote.
- Open the remote. Remove any screws. Search carefully — they will typically be hidden for a sleek design. Look behind the batteries and underneath any top-level panels.
- Clean the inside. Examine the rubber pad and circuit board to see how much dirt has accumulated. My Philips TV remote showed classic dirty remote issues.
If your TV remote won’t stop scrolling, it might be because of old remotes, stuck buttons, interference, low batteries, or TV issues. To fix it, try using the remote on another TV, changing the batteries, cleaning it, or checking for nearby interference.
Clean the buttons using the cotton swab. Rub the cotton swab gently to avoid rubbing off the numbers or letters. Clean on and around the edge of each button to get at the grime that makes your remote sticky when your press the buttons. Use as many cotton swabs as necessary.
