Welcome to IGN's Walkthrough for the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. This page contains information on the BotW main quest - Divine Beast Vah Ruta, which includes getting to and completing the Divine Beast Dungeon.
After speaking with the Zora King in Zora's Domain to learn of their plight, and of the tragedy that befell their champion Mipha 100 years ago, your mission is clear - you must find a way into the Divine Beast with the help of Prince Sidon. It seems Shock Arrows are the key to powering the beast down, but you’ll need to find some first.
Video Guide: Getting the Zora Armor and Helm
First thing’s first - Muzu was the one initially tasked with finding shock arrows, but he left in a huff. Leave the throne room and head down to the square below.
Be sure to put on your new Zora Armor, which lets you swim faster and swim straight up waterfalls!
Down below, speak to Muzu and Sidon where they will argue about Mipha, and Link will have a memory of his time with Mipha.
Note: Before heading up the East waterfall, did you read that worn away inscription about the Zora Helm? It mentions that it was left in the ruins of a lake near the mountain - so head North and use your Zora Armor to swim up the large waterfall up to the very top to get to Toto Lake.
You’ll find submerged ruins here - look carefully with the Magnesis Rune to spot a chest under the ruins. Reel it up and you’ll gain the lost Zora Helm, which increases your swim speed even more and even lets you perform a damaging spin attack while swimming!
Video Guide: Assaulting Divine Beast Vah Ruta
Before leaving, be sure to talk to the Zora Laflat who has a related quest to take a picture of the menacing red-maned Lynel. When you’re ready, leave through the East Gate by way of the second floor bridge. Head left from the signpost to Mikau Lake and swim up the waterfalls to Lulu Lake, and again up to Ploymus Mountain.
Remember that your task is to collect 20 arrows. Some of which you may have gotten from Lizalfos earlier, but if not, you’ll need to make up the difference here. As you walk up from the waterfall, you can spot two arrows in a tree on the left, and another in a tree further up. Head up the path to find a fourth arrow in a tree next to a signpost.
As you reach the summit, you’ll spot the Lynel. This fearsome foe is probably well beyond your power, and as the cutscene shows, it’s better to remain out of sight.
You’ll need to sneak around the rocks and trees to find all the arrows you can here - so ingest any sneaking potions if you need to or just keep a low profile. If he does see you, you’ll need to run fast as the Lynel will launch more shock arrows in quick bursts of three each and will likely kill you in an instant. Even if you try and break line of sight, he can shoot a volley in the air to come raining down over you. Just remain calm and quiet, and keep him in view as you move around to know when to duck behind a rock.
Once you have enough, or even close to enough, start heading up the side to the top of the peak where Shatterback Point is. There’s a few more arrows up here whether or not you’ve already got your 20. Jump down into the reservoir and meet up with Sidon. At the docks, there’s a bed if you need to rest after your encounter with the Lynel - otherwise, it’s time to find a way onto the Divine Beast. Be sure to also turn in your photo of the Lynel to Laflat - as she’ll reward you with the Zora Greaves - completing the set!
Hopping onto Sidon’s back, he’ll race around the machine waiting for an opening to bring you close to the waterfalls that will lead you up to take a shot at one of the four pink orbs with a Shock Arrow. Before you can do that, you’ll need to eliminate Vah Ruta’s defenses - which Sidon will point out that come in the form of giant ice blocks. Sounds familiar.
At first, the Divine Beast will summon a group of ice blocks in the air that will travel at you fairly fast. You can snipe them out of the air with a bow if you’re quick, or even stab at them with large weapons when they get close. If you aren’t able to destroy it and take damage, the ice block will respawn and you’ll have to keep trying until it’s destroyed. However, the easiest way to destroy the blocks comes from your Sheikah Slate. The Cryonis Rune doesn’t just create ice blocks - it destroys them too - and that includes the blocks summoned by Vah Ruta. If you’re quick and aim fast, you can eliminate them at a distance the moment they start coming towards you - then all you have to do is wait for Sidon to bring you close to a waterfall and fly up into the air, then take aim at one of the pink orbs.

Video Guide: Divine Beast Vah Ruta Dungeon
Sidon will leave you to face the innards of the machine alone, as Link activates the waypoint so that you can leave or fast travel back to the dungeon at any time. This is important, as you’ll need as much gear as possible to survive this dungeon, so make sure you’re stocked on food, weapons, and arrows before continuing on.
Inside Vah Ruta, you’ll find it’s crawling with Ganon’s corruption - known as Blight. This ooze hurts to stand on, but can be cleared away in some parts if you see an eye lurking about. Shoot the first one with an arrow to open a path inside.
The voice of Mipha will reach you - telling you that a Guidance Stone can give you a map of the beast. It’s sealed however - so first deal with the Guardian Scout, and then look at the blight blocking the gate and spy an eye in the water to the right. Once the blight is cleared, summon an ice block under the gate to open it and get your Sheikah Slate ready for a map upgrade.
This map is different than your regular map - it shows a 3D model of the beast with your position in it, as well as that of four terminals needed to control the Divine Beast. You can also control certain parts of the Divine Beast in the map menu by selecting a position for the trunk and executing the command.
Video Guide: Waterblight Ganon Boss
Ganon has sent one of his incarnations to deal with you - and this is no joke. Waterblight Ganon packs fearsome spear with a crazy reach, so you’ll need to be on your guard.
At range, he’ll throw his spear with tremendous force, and up close he may either try for a lunge, a large sweep, or stab it into the ground to create a shockwave.
You have a lot of different methods for dealing damage to him - any weapons you possess (spears and thrown weapons work best with their reach to his floating form) or using any bows and arrows you possess - as hits to his eye deal critical damage and may stun him.
However, one of your best tools is your Cryonis Rune. Since the room is flooded, you can summon pillars wherever you like, and not only do your pillars have the ability to block his attacks, it will actually shatter his spear, forcing him to teleport to another area and reassemble it in a costly animation that lets you strike at will.
If you see Waterblight Gannon getting ready for an attack you can’t dodge, be sure to quickly summon an ice block to protect yourself with. You can also take cover behind the main console, as he cannot hit you back there.
You’ll be returned to Zora’s Domain on a much more bright and sunny day. Be sure to visit the King Zora, who will congratulate you amid the cheers of the Zora you saved. The King will also reward you with a nearby chest that contains Mipha’s Lightscale Trident! It’s a very important trident, and luckily you can speak to Dento in the workshop if it breaks and he’ll repair it for you! Be sure to also check around town as many more Side Quests have opened up now that the people here trust you.
