Email messages that are digitally signed or encrypted can offer enhanced security. You can send or receive signed and encrypted email in the Mail app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

A digital signature verifies the authenticity of an email. In other words, it proves that the email was sent from the address it claims to be sent from and that its contents haven’t been altered. When a message is signed, a signed icon is shown next to the sender’s address.

Encryption offers an even higher level of security than a digital signature. It allows for private communication between the sender and the recipient that can’t be read or accessed by third parties. When an email is encrypted, a lock is shown next to the sender’s address.

Note: Some email clients, including the iCloud.com web mail app, may not be able to display encrypted emails.
