I’m finishing up lesson 17 (out of 50) currently, and I’ve been using the textbook since I believe March, and have already been able to apply the stuff I’m learning in the book to reading manga and other Japanese in native media, so it’s definitely possible to successfully use it for self-study, I think.

   • First you can study Minna no Nihongo 1 vocab on jpdb.io. It’s like anki. And it has decks per lesson. (For vocab study I advise to be 1 lesson a head in what you need for your current lesson level.    • Minna no Nihongo is divided into two books, each consisting of 25 lessons. Since I have already learned 16 lessons, I think I understand Japanese better than I thought I studied with Minna no Nihongo (many years ago). After finishing both books I passed N3, so that's my benchmark.

   • This allows language schools to put students who don’t understand each other in the same classroom. Give the Brazilian student the Portuguese translation and the UK student the English translation and you are good to go. So if you study the Minna book you will be ahead of the game in Japan.

   • Kira sensei has a yt course that covers Minna no Nihongo 1 and 2, but it's in Spanish. I bet there should be similar courses in English in the web. I just work with the YT courses and the translated book.

   Should I study Minna or genki?

   • Give the Brazilian student the Portuguese translation and the UK student the English translation and you are good to go. So if you study the Minna book you will be ahead of the game in Japan. If you don’t have plans to study in Japan, I’d go with Genki as I think it’s easier all around for English speaking students.
