Sep 19, 2024 · An early champion of aseptic procedures, Halsted introduced (1890) the use of thin rubber gloves that do not impede the delicate touch demanded by surgery. By ensuring completely sterile conditions in the operating room, Halsted’s gloves allowed surgical access to all parts of the body.

Halsted was credited with starting the first formal surgical residency training program in the United States at Johns Hopkins. He based this mainly on the ideas that he obtained in Europe, especially those of the Germans, Austrians, and Swiss.
William Stewart Halsted developed a novel residency training program at Johns Hopkins Hospital that, with some modifications, became the model for surgical and medical residency training in North America. While performing anesthesia research early in his career, Halsted became addicted to cocaine and morphine.

William Stewart Halsted was a pioneer of surgery in the USA and made many wide-ranging contributions, including the surgical treatment of breast cancer. He changed the training of surgeons from a disorganised apprenticeship to the residency training programmes used today.
Halsted's major contribution to medicine was the popularization of a radical operation for carcinoma of the breast. He also contributed to the surgical techniques for thyroidectomy, vascular aneurysms, and repair of inguinal hernias.
