The first railroad reached Statesville in 1858, linking Salisbury to Asheville, and was known as the Western North Carolina Railroad. The Atlantic, Tennessee & Ohio Railroad (ATO) began serving the Statesville to Charlotte line shortly after the Western service began.
The story of its origin is given in an article by Fannie Lou Bingham in the Charlotte News of September 27, 1935. Before 1888 Davidson was a market place for a great many farmers from up and down the Statesville road and from Lincoln County.
