The history of Quality Street® all began when John and Violet Mackintosh set up a sweet shop in Halifax, West Yorkshire, in 1890. Following the success of their best selling toffee, John, otherwise known as the 'Toffee King', set up the world's first toffee factory in Halifax.

It burned down in 1909, so Mackintosh bought an old carpet factory and converted it into a new facility. When John Mackintosh died, his son Harold inherited the business and, in 1936, he invented Quality Street. The name was inspired by a play of the same name by J. M. Barrie.
