Oklahoma City's history begins with the settlement of "unassigned lands" in the region in the 1880s, and continues with the city's development through statehood, World War I and the Oklahoma City bombing.
Jan 29, 2023 · On April 22, 1889, the Unassigned Lands were opened for settlement and thousands of people, known as “Sooners,” rushed to claim land in the area that would become Oklahoma City. The city was officially incorporated on July 15, 1890, and quickly grew as a center of commerce and transportation.
Oklahoma City was founded by hard-working men and women when this land was opened for settlement on April 22, 1889. The land run spanned 400 acres and became home to 5,000 people overnight. In the days after the land run, two townsite companies laid claim to various plots of land, each making their own map.
Oklahoma City sprang into existence on April 22, 1889, when approximately fifty thousand participants of the Land Run of 1889 claimed town lots and quarter sections in the area known as the Unassigned Lands.
