How did it come to be this way? Penny Churchill explains all. Notting Hill was a rural hamlet in the county of Middlesex until the westward expansion of London reached Bayswater in the early 19th century.
A Storied Past. In the 1800s, Notting Hill began to transform. It became a hub for brick and pottery manufacturing, which brought an influx of residents and workers. The rapid urbanization, however, led to crowded living conditions and issues of poverty.
Cheap, attractive houses encouraged young professionals and families to move to Notting Hill in the 1980s. Former multi-occupancy dwellings were restored to single-family homes or turned into flats, and as the income of the inhabitants rose, shops, restaurants and bars became upmarket.
