Jan 15, 2010 · The town name honors Abner E. Norman, who led a team appointed to survey the Unassigned Lands between 1870 and 1873. His group camped where the town is now situated, and the words "Norman's Camp" were burned into a tree.
It was named in honor of Abner Norman, the area's initial land surveyor, and was formally incorporated on May 13, 1891. Norman has prominent higher education and related research industries, as it is home to the University of Oklahoma, the largest university in the state, with nearly 32,000 students.
Beginning as a tent city in April 1889 when Oklahoma was opened to white settlement, it was named for Aubrey Norman, a Santa Fe Railway surveyor. The city’s development was assured when the University of Oklahoma was established there in 1890 on land donated by its citizens.

Aug 23, 2022 · The Land Run of 1889 saw 150 settlers who camped out while the town was constructed. Two businessmen, Delbert Larsh and Thomas Waggoner, campaigned for the first state university to be located in Norman. This led to the establishment of the University of Oklahoma in 1890.
