Jan 15, 2010 · In the 1990s Norman overtook Lawton to become Oklahoma's third largest city, behind Oklahoma City and Tulsa. The town name honors Abner E. Norman, who led a team appointed to survey the Unassigned Lands between 1870 and 1873.
It was named in honor of Abner Norman, the area's initial land surveyor, and was formally incorporated on May 13, 1891. Norman has prominent higher education and related research industries, as it is home to the University of Oklahoma, the largest university in the state, with nearly 32,000 students.
Beginning as a tent city in April 1889 when Oklahoma was opened to white settlement, it was named for Aubrey Norman, a Santa Fe Railway surveyor. The city’s development was assured when the University of Oklahoma was established there in 1890 on land donated by its citizens.
