Sep 2, 2023 · Battle of Morlaix, 30 September 1342. 1341 saw a political crisis take shape as the result of the death of the Duke of Brittany without a male heir. Two rival claims were made, both in right of their wives, by Charles of Blois and John de Montfort.
Battle of Morlaix: Charles of Blois, invoking his support among the French speaking nobles of northern Brittany, assembled a powerful army, before advancing on 29 th September 1342 to relieve Morlaix and give battle to Northampton’s English army.
His army was reinforced by 800 pro-English Bretons, known as Montfortists. By the time of Northampton’s arrival at the port of Brest, the French had laid siege to a number of Breton strongholds in western Brittany, among which was Morlaix.
Sep 21, 2024 · The town is dominated by a two-storied railway viaduct (built 1861–64, partially destroyed by the Royal Air Force in 1943 and now reconstructed) that spans the valley 200 feet (60 metres) above the quays. A French Revolutionary general, Victor Moreau, was born there in 1763.
